Ultra-short pulse generation in optics

Abstract:
Ultra-short pulses are basic carriers of bits of information in optics. Their duration in modern devices varies in the range from a few femtoseconds to picoseconds. They are used in optical communication systems as well as in optical information processing devices. All-optical systems have to have means of generating them and keeping the pulses stable as long as we need them. Information processing requires also the knowledge of interaction between the pulses in active optical devices. General principles of pulse generation by passively mode-locked lasers and their propagation and interaction in optical transmission links will be discussed in this talk.

Professor Nail AKHMEDIEV is one of the leading researchers in
theoretical nonlinear optics internationally.
He is a Professor of Optical Sciences Center and Department of
Theoretical Physics, ANU.
He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in recognition of his
work on nonlinear guided optics.
He is also a member of Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (USA) and
Australian Optical Society.
He has published nearly 200 papers in refereed international journals,
around 100 conference papers, a book
"Solitons, nonlinear pulses and beams" Chapman and Hall, London (1997)
with Dr. Ankiewicz
(which has now been translated into Russian) and several chapters in
books.
He is a recipient of the DSc degree from the Higher Qualification
Commission for the Counsel
of Ministers of the USSR, and the PhD and MS degrees, both from Moscow
State University.
He is a member of the Program Committees of a number of International
conferences.
